Performing a jaw thrust to open the airway is an important part of the primary survey. That said, it is often performed incorrectly.
It is designed for use in casualties who have suspected or confirmed neck injuries as it enables the airway to be opened without moving the head or neck as is done in the more common head tilt/chin lift manoeuvre.
